Clown CareSM currently employs 93 professional performing artists as clown doctors and is in year-round residence in 17 leading pediatric facilities across the country, seven in the New York area alone.Founded in 1986 by Big Apple Circus cofounder Michael Christensen, the Big Apple Circus Clown CareSM hospital program has become established as the leader and expert in the field of "hospital clowning."  The professional members of Clown CareSM use juggling, mime, music and magic, to bring laughter and joy to the bedsides of acutely and chronically ill children, four hours a day, five days a week, year-round, in seventeen leading pediatric facilities across the country.Annually, more than 90 Clown Doctors, specially selected and trained to work in the sensitive hospital environment, make an estimated 280,000 one-on-one bedside visits in pediatric services throughout the hospital, including: intensive care units, bone marrow transplant, burn treatment, pediatric AIDS, emergency rooms, acute care clinics, inpatient wards, physical therapy, and out patient wards.
